Cardwell was the first port settlement on the Queensland coast north of Port Denison (Bowen). The first party of non-indigenous people to settle at Rockingham Bay arrived in January 1864 and was led by George Elphinstone Dalrymple.

Can you swim in the sea at Cardwell?
Cardwell Beach (794) is well protected by Hinchinbrook Island and is usually calm. Consequently the beach consists of a steep, soft, 20 m wide high tide beach, fronted by mud flats at low tide. There are a jetty and boat ramp that are only useable at high tide, so watch the tides if swimming or boating.

Do you need a 4wd to get to Cardwell spa pools?
Although the road is unsealed, it’s well-graded and you can access the Cardwell Spa Pools with a regular 2WD sedan or hatchback. Though, if you’d rather avoid the unsealed roads, take the northern access on Ellerbeck Road (see map below), since this drive will be shorter.
