The site is reached by a 45- minute boat ride from Lahaina Harbor on Maui. The First Cathedral scuba diving site has water depths of 45 to 60 feet and includes a 100-foot-long lava tube nearly two stories in height. The site features a wide array of fascinating sea life from octopi to sea turtles and Moorish Idol fish.

This beautiful dive is one you won’t soon forget. After you take in the gorgeous views, exiting the cathedral can be quite a rush.

The crater houses a reef with visibility as deep as 150 feet (46 m). Molokini is home to about 250 species of fish, many endemic (see Ecology below). The best conditions occur in early morning. The water depth is 20–50 feet in the majority of the allowed dive spots.

How did the Lanai cathedrals come to be?
Lanai’s Cathedrals formed thousands of years ago when ancient lava flowed into the ocean creating expansive cavern systems. Over the years, segments of lava rock have fallen from the top and sides of the Cathedrals allowing the bright Hawaiian sun to pierce through, illuminating the caverns and highlighting the turquoise water.
